The East of Culture \u2013 Different Sounds festival (2-5 July, Lublin) is not only about concerts, but also about encounters with visual art and photography. This year\u2019s exhibition programme includes a presentation of the poetry of Lithuanian artist Benediktas Janu\u0161evi\u010dius, a comprehensive retrospective of works by the Krak\u00f3w-based artist Piotr Marek, and an open-air exhibition of photographs by Wiktor Wo\u0142kow.<\/strong><\/p>\n This is the 19th edition of Different Sounds, organised by Workshops of Culture in Lublin, and the 13th edition held as part of East of Culture \u2013 a project implemented by the National Centre for Culture with funding from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, and jointly organised by three cities in eastern Poland \u2013 Lublin, Bia\u0142ystok, and Rzesz\u00f3w.<\/p>\n When:<\/strong> July 1-31, 2026, available 24 hours a day The exhibition presents black-and-white photographs by Wiktor Wo\u0142kow taken between 1977 and 1979, a period of particular importance in the artist\u2019s work, when he documented the landscape, nature, and everyday life of Podlasie with extraordinary sensitivity. The photographs depict a world frozen in time: places, people, and nature that today often exist only in memories and in photographic frames.<\/p>\n The work of Wiktor Wo\u0142kow is something more than documentation of reality. It is a story about the deep bond between human beings and nature, about an attentive gaze at the surrounding world, and about the ability to perceive beauty in its simplicity. His photographs create a unique visual archive of Podlasie: a record of the natural and cultural landscape of the region, which has undergone changes over the years.<\/p>\n Today, the artist\u2019s legacy is collected and presented by the Wiktor Wo\u0142kow Museum of Photography in Turo\u015b\u0144 Ko\u015bcielna \u2013 a branch of the Podlaskie Museum opened in March 2024. The museum\u2019s patron, the most outstanding photographic artist of the Podlasie region, left behind several tens of thousands of negatives and transparencies, as well as hundreds of photographs. The museum not only preserves this extraordinary heritage but also introduces visitors to the natural and cultural richness of Podlasie, fostering sensitivity to the beauty of nature and the art of landscape photography.<\/p>\n The presented exhibition is an invitation to encounter the Podlasie of years past, seen through the eyes of Wiktor Wo\u0142kow \u2013 an artist who became its guardian, chronicler, and ambassador.<\/p>\n The exhibition was prepared in cooperation with the Wiktor Wo\u0142kow Museum of Photography in Turo\u015b\u0144 Ko\u015bcielna \u2013 a branch of the Podlaskie Museum in Bia\u0142ystok.<\/em><\/p>\n Wiktor Wo\u0142kow<\/strong> (born 4 April 1942 in Bia\u0142ystok, died 27 March 2012 in Supra\u015bl) was one of Poland\u2019s most outstanding nature and landscape photographers. For more than 40 years, he photographed north-eastern Poland. The valleys of the Narew and Biebrza rivers, and the Knyszyn Forest were his favourite locations, which he tirelessly explored with a camera in his hand.<\/p>\n He was a member of the Association of Polish Art Photographers and the Bia\u0142ystok Photographic Society. He was the author of around 100 exhibitions and many photographic albums. He received more than 100 national and international awards.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n <\/p>\n When:<\/strong> Where:<\/strong> Workshops of Culture, Grodzka 7 \u2013 ground floor and patio (opening)<\/p>\n Admission free<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cThe Shortest Poem by Benediktas Janu\u0161evi\u010dius\u201d \u2013 an exhibition based on the poet\u2019s selection under the same title, presents an anti-lyrical, ironic process of poetic \u201cproduction\u201d and serves as an example of concrete poetry. The combination of a minimal graphic form with content minimalism tells the story of the artist\u2019s world with a touch of irony.<\/p>\n Benediktas Janu\u0161evi\u010dius<\/strong> (born 1973) \u2013 poet, prose writer, translator, photographer, and cultural animator. He has edited cultural periodicals, including \u201cLiterat\u016bra ir menas\u201d and \u201cMetai\u201d, as well as festival almanacs. He is an organiser of literary events and numerous exhibitions of visual poetry. He photographs and creates film documentation of meetings with artists and writers. In 2002, together with D. Pocevi\u010dius, he founded the portal www.tekstai.lt, and since 2014 he has run the portal www.slinktys.lt. He is a recipient of several literary awards, including the Young Yatvingian Award. His works have been translated into English, Latvian, Polish, Russian, Belarusian, Slovenian, and Spanish. Polish translations have been published in the journal \u201cTekstualia\u201d. He lives in the countryside in the Anyk\u0161\u010diai district.<\/p>\n Zuzanna Mrozikowa<\/strong> \u2013 Polish and Lithuanian studies graduate, translator, and home educator. She works at a library for children and young people. Her translations and articles have been published, among others, in \u201cBorussia\u201d, \u201cDekada Literacka\u201d, \u201cKartki\u201d, \u201cKorespondencja z Ojcem\u201d, \u201cLiteratura na \u015awiecie\u201d, \u201cTekstualia\u201d, \u201cTygodnik Powszechny\u201d, \u201cZeszyty Literackie\u201d, and \u201cZnad Wilii\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n <\/p>\n When: Where:<\/strong> Gardzienice Gallery, Grodzka 5a, first floor<\/p>\n Admission free<\/strong><\/p>\n Piotr Marek<\/strong> was born in Krak\u00f3w in 1950, where he lived and worked until his death in 1985. His father was a well-known Krak\u00f3w-based sculptor and professor, while his mother was a respected art conservator.<\/p>\n Piotr Marek was a versatile artist. He worked in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, performance art, fashion, and music. He was a multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, and lyricist. He also created self-built instruments as well as various devices and effects that led him to a unique and timeless sound. His final original musical and performative project was the legendary band D\u00fcp\u0105<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In all the fields of art he practiced, Piotr Marek was a perfectionist, but above all he was a person curious about new phenomena and an open-minded observer who approached everything with a sense of distance. Thanks to this, the quality of his work has a timeless and unprecedented dimension in terms of pioneering spirit and courage. He was a rebel and a provocateur who approached the material of his expression with remarkable humility.<\/p>\n Despite the unfavorable conditions of life and artistic work in the People\u2019s Republic of Poland, Piotr Marek was a very prolific artist. In 1971, he was accepted into the Association of Polish Artists and Designers (ZPAP) as the youngest member in history, even though he did not hold the required formal qualifications. His paintings were purchased by art dealers from all over Western Europe. To this day, a large portion of Piotr Marek\u2019s paintings remain abroad in private collections.<\/p>\n Apart from a few small exhibitions, 40 years after his death, Piotr Marek has still not been given a major retrospective exhibition, which we aim to change in Lublin by bringing his work as widely to the public as possible. At the Gardzienice Gallery throughout July, visitors will be able to see paintings and graphic works by Piotr Marek<\/strong> as well as the visual legacy connected with the artistic output and activity of the band D\u00fcp\u0105<\/strong>. The exhibition will also feature unique video materials, photographs, and documents from the band\u2019s period of activity, as well as original recordings presented as sound installations.<\/p>\n The exhibition titled \u201cZemsta Hegara\u201d is curated by Miko\u0142aj Kownacki<\/strong> \u2013 a musician and visual artist, member of the band Pop Magic \u2013 the label that released the D\u00fcp\u0105 album (2025), son of Krzysztof Kownacki \u2013 a friend and collaborator of Piotr Marek.<\/p>\n On June 4 at 12:00-13:00<\/strong> we invite you to a guided tour of the exhibition \u201cHegar’s Revenge\u201d for blind and visually impaired people<\/strong><\/a>. During the guided tour, we will explore the exhibition not only through storytelling and audio description, but also through selected sensory elements.
