In times of war, crisis, and political tension, translation becomes not only work with language but also a means of building understanding and reimagining the world through words.<\/p>\n<h2>Programme<\/h2>\n<h4>Opening of the Translation Symposium \u201cThe Power of Translation\u201d on the 457th Anniversary of the Union of Lublin<\/h4>\n<p>Opening Remarks \u2013 Grzegorz Rzepecki, Director of Workshops of Culture in Lublin<\/p>\n<h4>Anna Lewicka-Koksanowicz \u2013 16 Translations of Ukrainian Literature: A Summary of the LEE Project<\/h4>\n<p>LEE, or Literary Eastern Express, is a project co-funded by the European Union\u2019s Creative Europe programme and an extension of the publishing activities of Workshops of Culture. Its aim is to promote contemporary Ukrainian literature in Poland and strengthen the presence of Eastern European culture within the international literary landscape. As part of the project, 16 books by Ukrainian authors representing different genres, generations, and aesthetic approaches have been translated and published. The core idea of the \u201cLiterary Eastern Express\u201d project is to build lasting intercultural bridges through literature. We seek to introduce Polish readers to authors who have previously been absent from, or underrepresented in, the Polish publishing market. Our goal is to showcase the richness of contemporary Ukrainian culture and to include it in the broader European debate on identity, history, and contemporary social challenges.<\/p>\n<h4>Magdalena Nowakowska \u2013 Georgian Poetry in the Face of Totalitarianism and Authoritarianism<\/h4>\n<p>Magdalena Nowakowska is a Kartvelologist, cultural animator, and translator of Georgian and Polish literature, with more than a dozen published translations of fiction, drama, and poetry in Poland and Georgia. She studied music, Georgian philology, and journalism. She has lived in Tbilisi for over twenty years. She creates and manages events promoting joint cultural and social initiatives involving artists, curators, and activists from the European Union, the Caucasus, and the Balkans. She is the founder and mentor of the Polish-Georgian School of Translation at the Mieroszewski Centre. She has worked as a communications specialist for the United Nations mission in Georgia and at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Tbilisi, as well as a correspondent for international media outlets. Her translation of Tamta Melashvili\u2019s novel \u201cKos kos je\u017cyna\u201d received the Book of the Year award from the magazine \u201cKsi\u0105\u017cki\u201d in 2024, while her translation of Iva Pezuashvili\u2019s \u201cZsyp\u201d was selected as Book of the Month in 2023. She was nominated for the Gdynia Literary Prize in 2025.<\/p>\n<h4>Agnieszka Rembia\u0142kowska \u2013 Lithuanian and Latvian Literature in Polish in the 21st Century (Who, What, and Where)<\/h4>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Agnieszka Rembia\u0142kowska (born in 1980 in W\u0142oc\u0142awek) is a Baltic studies scholar, academic lecturer affiliated, among others, with the University of Warsaw, as well as a translator and editor. She has been publishing literary translations from Lithuanian (and, less frequently, Latvian) since 2005. She is the author of more than a dozen book-length translations, and her work has also appeared in literary journals including \u201cAkcent\u201d, \u201cElewator\u201d, \u201cCzas Literatury\u201d, \u201cFabularie\u201d, \u201cPismo\u201d, and \u201cKultura Enter\u201d, as well as in literary anthologies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Together with Joanna Tabor, she edited the anthology of contemporary Lithuanian poetry \u201cPauzy w milczeniu\u201d (Sejny: Pogranicze, 2023), featuring 31 Lithuanian poets and 16 translators. She regularly participates in translation seminars and workshops and has co-organised the Wiosna Poezji festival in Warsaw since 2016. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stl.org.pl\/profil\/agnieszka-rembialkowska\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>She is a member of the Literary Translators Association.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>She received the translation award of the international literary festival Poezijos pavasaris (2018) for her translations of poetry collections by Sigitas Geda, Nijol\u0117 Miliauskait\u0117 (with Alina Kuzborska), and Vladas Brazi\u016bnas, as well as the Algis Kal\u0117da Award (2022). She has been nominated for the European Poet of Freedom Award (2020, for her translation of Agn\u0117 \u017dagrakalyt\u0117\u2019s poetry collection \u201cW\u0142a\u015bnie:\u201d \/ \u201c\u0160tai:\u201d), the Gdynia Literary Prize (2021, for her translation of Birut\u0117 Jonu\u0161kait\u0117\u2019s novel \u201cMaranta\u201d), and the Ossolineum Prize for Poetry Translation 2026 (for her translation of Birut\u0117 Jonu\u0161kait\u0117\u2019s poetry collection \u201cLista obecno\u015bci\u201d).<\/p>\n<h4>Bartosz W\u00f3jcik \u2013 Decolonial Practices in the Translation of Contemporary Poetry<\/h4>\n<p>Bartosz W\u00f3jcik is an assistant professor in the Department of Applied Linguistics at Maria Curie-Sk\u0142odowska University (UMCS) and a member of the Literary Translators Association. He is a co-creator of the Lublin Miasto Literatury Festival (2025), host of Uniwersytet Reggae at the Ostr\u00f3da Reggae Festival, and a promoter of Anglophone Caribbean culture. His recent work includes translations of Mohammed el-Kurd\u2019s poetry collection \u201cRifka\u201d (Wsp\u00f3\u0142bycie, 2025) and the poetry volume \u201cPrzeno\u015bny raj\u201d by Trinidadian-British author Roger Robinson (Instytut Kultury Miejskiej, 2026). He is active in support of the Equality Union Association (\u201cUnia R\u00f3wno\u015bci\u201d), a non-governmental organisation whose statutory mission is to support the LGBTQ+ community. He is also co-guardian of the dog Mira.<\/p>\n<h4>Benediktas Janu\u0161evi\u010dius \u2013 Ukraine at War in Lithuanian Translations<\/h4>\n<p>Benediktas Janu\u0161evi\u010dius (born 1973) is a poet, prose writer, translator, and cultural animator. He has edited cultural periodicals including \u201cLiterat\u016bra ir menas\u201d and \u201cMetai\u201d, as well as festival anthologies such as \u201c\u017diemos poezija\u201d and \u201cPoezijos pavasaris\u201d. He organises literary meetings and numerous visual poetry exhibitions. He also works as a photographer and creates film documentation of meetings with artists.<\/p>\n<p>In 2002, together with D. Pocevi\u010dius, he founded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tekstai.lt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>tekstai<\/strong><\/a> portal, and since 2014 he has run the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slinktys.lt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Slinktys<\/strong><\/a> portal. He has published the poetry collections: \u201cVeidas\u201d (1992), \u201c\u0160alkis\u201d (1995), \u201c12 k\u0117d\u017ei\u0173: eil\u0117ra\u0161\u010diai \/ daiktai\u201d (1997), \u201cButo raktas\u201d (1999), \u201co+6: eil\u0117ra\u0161\u010diai \/ daiktai\u201d (2006), \u201cRaugintu krauju\u201d (2007), \u201cKi\u0161kis ki\u0161ki\u0161kai ki\u0161kena\u201d (2008, with CD), \u201c\u017dod\u017eiai\u201d (2016), and \u201cTrumpiausias Benedikto Janu\u0161evi\u010diaus eil\u0117ra\u0161tis\u201d (2019; a collection of concrete poetry).<\/p>\n<p>He is a recipient of several literary awards, including the Young Yotvingian Prize. His works have been translated into English, Latvian, Polish, Russian, Belarusian, Slovenian, and Spanish. Polish translations of his work have appeared in the journal \u201cTekstualia\u201d. He lives in the countryside in the Anyk\u0161\u010diai district.<\/p>\n<h4>Bella Szwarcman-Czarnota \u2013 How to Translate from Yiddish When There Is No Yiddishland<\/h4>\n<p>Bella Szwarcman-Czarnota is a graduate of the Faculty of Philosophy and the Postgraduate Programme for French Language Translators at the University of Warsaw. She worked at the Philosophy Editorial Department of PWN and in the archives of the Jewish Historical Institute; she was also an editorial secretary of the \u201cBiuletyn \u017bIH\u201d journal. She was a co-founder, and later an editor and columnist, of the Jewish magazine \u201cMidrasz\u201d. She is the author of eight books, including a family songbook, a music album recorded together with her daughter and sister, and the book \u201c\u015awi\u0119tujmy!\u201d, co-written with her daughter and a friend. She coordinated and co-authored \u201cHagada kobiet\u201d and has translated around 50 books from French, Russian, and Yiddish. For many years she has delivered lectures on biblical women at the Austrian Cultural Forum. She also teaches at the Jewish Open University. She is a recipient of the Fr. S. Musia\u0142 Award, the Jan Karski and Pola Nire\u0144ska Award, and the \u201cLiteratura na \u015awiecie\u201d Award.<\/p>\n<h4>Andrij Sawene\u0107 \u2013 The Translator of Ukrainian Literature as Editor: Practical Experiences<\/h4>\n<p>Andrij Sawene\u0107 (born 1977 in Kornyn, Ukraine) is a translator and translation scholar. He graduated from Ivan Franko Zhytomyr State Pedagogical University and the European College of Polish and Ukrainian Universities. He received his PhD at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, where he also taught. He is the author of the monograph \u201cPoezja w przek\u0142adzie: \u00bbukrai\u0144ska\u00ab Szymborska\u201d (2006) and numerous articles on translation studies.<\/p>\n<p>His Ukrainian translations include, among others, novels by Ernest Hemingway and Salman Rushdie, as well as three selections of Wis\u0142awa Szymborska\u2019s poetry. He is the editor and translator of the Polish-Ukrainian poetry anthology \u201cLublin z dala, Lublin z bliska\u201d (2017). His translations into Polish include, among others, Jurko Gud\u017a\u2019s poem \u201cBarykady na Krzy\u017cu\u201d (2014), Mykola Riabchuk\u2019s selection of essays \u201cPoprzednie \u017cycie\u201d (2018), the extended conversation \u201cWorochtarium\u201d by Yurii Andrukhovych, Oleksandr Boichenko, and Orest Drul (2019), and Oleksandr Irvanets\u2019s novel \u201cChark\u00f3w 1938\u201d. He is a co-editor of the Eastern Express publishing series.<\/p>\n<h4>Discussion: \u201cThe Social Status of Translators and Socio-Economic Aspects\u201d \u2013 a discussion with invited speakers and participants<\/h4>\n<p>Moderator: Aleksandra Zi\u0144czuk<\/p>\n<p>Aleksandra Zi\u0144czuk is a literary scholar, poet, essayist, social anthropologist, and translator. She is a cultural manager, editor-in-chief of the magazine \u201cKultura Enter\u201d, and managing editor of the Workshops of Culture Publishing House. For her creative work and publishing initiatives, she has received, among others, the \u201cLiteratura na \u015awiecie\u201d Award and the Hryhorii Skovoroda International Literary Prize. For many years, she has been active in creating spaces for intercultural dialogue at the intersection of cultural heritage, history, art, and literature.
