“And we are opening the gates,” performed by the quartet of Raphael Rogi\u0144ski, Helena Ganjalyan, Talya Balikcioglu, and Adam Witkowski, is another of this year\u2019s festival premieres. The themes explored by the artists in this extraordinary project revolve around questions of belonging, displacement, and identity in today\u2019s complicated world, which is changing before our very eyes.
Raphael Rogi\u0144ski and his invited guests, despite hailing from different cultural backgrounds, share a similar baggage of experiences. During Different Sounds, they will attempt to capture the essence of their artistic explorations through a synthesis of music and dance. As Rogi\u0144ski explains, for this stage mystery\u2014inspired by a painting by Nicholas Roerich, the brilliant painter, scientist, mystic, and researcher of Eastern cultures\u2014he brought together artists united by the shared trauma of “detachment.”
Two dancers, from Armenia and Turkey, and two musicians with Jewish, Kurdish, and Uzbek roots, are set to create a kind of psychodrama. Through sound and movement, they will ask at what point we, as humans, are equal. Is this equality only awaiting us in the face of death, as depicted in Medieval and Baroque paintings? Is the only moment we stop questioning our lineage a critical situation, such as a collapsed mine or a sunken submarine with no chance of returning to the surface? It is hard not to feel that today, it is more “proper” to appear equal than to truly experience that equality. <\/p>\n
