The Ex Unlimited – photography exhibition

“The Ex Unlimited” isn’t just an exhibition; it’s a site-specific journey, with each presentation uniquely shaped by its environment. The project first burst onto the scene in 2011 at Warsaw’s Powiśle Heat and Power Plant. There, colossal photo wallpapers depicting punk artists transformed the old industrial spaces, raw and vibrant, much like the music they celebrated. These powerful images remained until the very walls themselves were demolished.

The installation’s current form emerged for the Krakow Jazz Autumn festival, gracing the retaining walls along the Vistula River. This new setting once again underscored the metaphorical power of The Ex’s creative force and their artistic kinship. Now, “The Ex Unlimited” arrives in Lublin, presented outdoors—exposed to the sun and wind, mirroring the enduring, unfazed spirit of The Ex’s music throughout time.

At the heart of these visuals lies the intimate connection between Polish performer Małgorzata Haduch and the iconic Dutch band The Ex. As their “merchandising girl,” Małgorzata’s lens captured pivotal moments: The Ex’s groundbreaking European tour with legendary saxophonist Getatchew Mekurya, and the arrival of Arnold de Boer as their new vocalist a year later. Many of these very photographs found their way onto the album cover of Catch My Shoe and within the LP folder Moa Anbessa, born from their collaboration with Getatchew.

To enrich this visual narrative, Małgorzata invited Ziga Koritnik, a photographer with over three decades of experience documenting the music scene. His contributions expand The Ex’s story, featuring not only the band members but also their close collaborators from “The Brass Unbound” project: Mats Gustafsson, Ab Baars, Ken Vandermark, and Paal Nilssen-Love from Lean Left.

The creation of this exhibition owes much to the significant contributions of Marek Wajda and Sebastian Molsk

“The Ex Unlimited” allows the artists to share a piece of their history with The Ex during the Different Spunds festival
