Film | Uppercase print
Radu Jude stands out as one of Europe’s most compelling and original filmmakers today. Over recent years, he has cultivated a distinctive style and cinematic language, earning well-deserved accolades at festivals like Berlin and Locarno for films such as “Do not expect too much from the end of the world” and “Aferim!”
A particularly notable work in Jude’s filmography is “Uppercase Print”, a fascinating film based on the true story of Romanian teenager Mugur Călinescu. A gifted graffiti artist, Mugur grew up in 1980s communist Romania under Nicolae Ceaușescu’s brutal regime. Unlike most, Mugur bravely and actively resisted oppression, expressing his dissent through street art and graffiti.
Armed with chalk, he wrote bold, uppercase messages on walls throughout Bucharest, openly denouncing the system’s terror and injustice. As a result, the sixteen-year-old was repeatedly arrested, interrogated, and subjected to severe repression. His remarkable defiance became the foundation for Radu Jude’s deeply compelling and thought-provoking film.
Screening organised in collaboration with the Romanian Cultural Institute in Warsaw.
