ABOUT
Widely regarded by the music industry as pioneers of post-rock and flagship representatives of instrumental alternative music, Tortoise was formed in 1990 in Chicago. Over more than 25 years of activity, they have earned a well-deserved cult status. They were among the first to consciously and innovatively fuse jazz and electronic influences with a rock foundation.
Long, sprawling compositions and the incredible, hypnotic nature of their live shows quickly became the band’s trademark. Over the years, the group has released a string of consistently surprising albums, while never shying away from fascinating collaborations with the likes of Chicago Underground or Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. Their music is diverse and ever-changing, yet it never wavers in its exceptional quality. On stage, Tortoise is all about the sound—a remarkable sense of momentum and melody where harmony plateaus only to collide with avant-garde improvisation. This is Art with a capital A.
