At this year’s Different Sounds, Belarus was represented by Super Besse, a group that has recently been conquering Western music markets. Hailing from Minsk, the artists draw heavily on cold wave and new wave aesthetics, while also making excursions into post-punk and electro. Listening to Super Besse immediately brings to mind the landmark achievements of Joy Division, Tuxedomoon, New Order, and Killing Joke.
A cold, sophisticated sound paired with onstage wildness is the recipe for success for these young Belarusians. The band was formed in 2013 and instantly caught the attention of the music industry in our part of Europe, resulting in a contract with the Latvian label I Love You Records. Today, Super Besse is undoubtedly one of the most interesting voices on the contemporary Belarusian scene.
