ABOUT
Shy Albatross — a project brought to life by the eminent guitarist Raphael Rogiński — serves as a musical medium bridging diverse cultures. The lyrics, drawn from various traditions and regions of the United States, explore the female perspective, often in extreme circumstances. Alongside laments and songs of hunger or despair, we encounter tales of female gangsters and women endowed with paranormal abilities. The unifying thread is the culture and history of America, embodying the drama and hope of women who arrived there either by choice or through the tragedy of slavery.
The band’s instrumentation reflects this journey, featuring sounds of the hammered dulcimer, balafon, guitar, mandolin, and vibraphone. Stylistically, the music seamlessly shifts from the blues to the rhythms of Africa, while Irish romances intertwine with the music of the distant prairie. To realize this vision, Rogiński has invited the crème de la crème of the Polish scene, led by vocalist Natalia “Natu” Przybysz. The lineup is completed by the masterful vibraphonist Miłosz Pękala and one of the most talented drummers of his generation, Hubert Zemler. This performance at the Different Sounds Festival marks the official premiere of the project.
