The Different Sounds lineup wouldn’t be complete without jazz, represented this year by the Israeli formation Shalosh. While the trio utilizes the classic jazz setup of piano, double bass, and drums, their musical excursions venture far beyond the standard frameworks of the genre.
While anchored in the jazz tradition, Shalosh effectively integrates African and Middle Eastern textures into their sound. Their work is defined by free improvisation and a playful approach to form; listeners will find echoes of desert blues and progressive rock alongside clever nods to pop culture anthems—most notably in their bravura interpretation of “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” This technical virtuosity, combined with the artists’ broad interests and “open-minded” philosophy, makes Shalosh one of the most compelling acts on Israel’s remarkably rich contemporary jazz scene.
