Saul Williams is an incredibly distinctive artist, renowned for his masterful command of the word and his deep social and political engagement with the problems of the modern world. Over the last twenty years, he has established himself as a man of many talents. His first album, the acclaimed Amethyst Rock Star (2001)—produced by the legendary Rick Rubin—caused a significant stir on the American hip-hop scene. His follow-up self-titled album, Saul Williams, featured guest appearances by the likes of Serj Tankian (System of a Down) and Zack de la Rocha (Rage Against the Machine), earning critical acclaim and a fantastic reception from fans.
However, before Williams turned to music, he rose to fame as a poet.
By the second half of the 1990s, he was already a legend of poetry slams, winning numerous competitions and becoming a leading figure of the movement. This culminated in his starring role in the famous 1998 film Slam. As his musical career evolved, he toured with acts such as Nine Inch Nails and The Mars Volta, and collaborated with The Fugees, Erykah Badu, De La Soul, and even Allen Ginsberg.
Today, Saul Williams is one of the most important and influential voices in contemporary America. His art and message have taken him to prestigious venues including the White House, the Sydney Opera House, the Louvre, and Lincoln Center. In Lublin, we had the opportunity to witness his solo performance, which stands as one of the key moments of Different Sounds 2018.
