Lineup
Elisabeth Harnik – piano
Mikołaj Trzaska – saxophone
Martin Brandlmayr – percussion, electronic instruments
Mikołaj Trzaska — a Gdańsk-based saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer, co-founder of the “yass” scene and an icon of the jazz avant-garde in Poland, as well as a composer for theater, documentaries, and feature films — met in the “Strenge Kammer” with composer and pianist Elisabeth Harnik. After graduating from the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz in piano, Harnik studied composition under Beat Furrer. Creating and performing across various fields of improvised music, Harnik has also performed as a vocalist.
Harnik and Trzaska are joined on stage by Austrian drummer, composer, improviser, and electronic artist Martin Brandlmayr. After completing his studies in classical percussion at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, he collaborated with ensembles associated with the post-rock scene, such as Radian, Trapist, and Kapital Band. Critics, praising his style, describe his playing as “sparse and incredibly precise.”
KILOGRAM RECORDS
This concert is presented as part of a showcase of the Kilogram Records catalogue.
Starting with this year’s edition, a permanent fixture of the Different Sounds festival will be the presentation of domestic independent record labels. First up is Kilogram Records—one of the most interesting Polish labels of the new century, whose impact extends far beyond the sphere of music.
An uncompromising, original vision, a wealth of cultural contexts, and a consistent, attractive graphic design make the label a unique and significant phenomenon.
Kilogram Records was founded in 2000 in Gdańsk by Ola and Mikołaj Trzaska. They were inspired by an initiative developed by another creative couple—the literary publishing house Czarne, run by Monika Sznajderman and Andrzej Stasiuk.
