Be Careful What You Wish For! – A discussion about careers in the music Industry
The cautionary adage, “Be careful what you wish for, it might come true,” is one that most of us have heard at least once in our lives. It can be a gesture of concern, but it can also be a way to dampen the spirits of dreamers. One might say that thankfully, not everyone who has heard such advice has heeded it, but as the rich history of music shows, every coin has two sides. During this discussion, we will talk about what happens when dreams of a music career come true too quickly or intensely. We will look at the mechanisms of career development and the role of mentors, the immediate environment, and family in the lives of young artists. We will grapple with the concept of “stage fright” and the modern terror of hospitality riders. We will talk about resilience and self-awareness. The context for the discussion will also be provided by threads on the topic of the lost “Generation X” and grunge stars described by Piotr Jagielski in the book “Grunge. Bękarty z Seattle” (Wydawnictwo Czarne, 2023).
Guests: Magdalena Angulska – manager and founder of the agency “Makes it happen”; Piotr Jagielski – journalist and author of the book “Grunge. Bękarty z Seattle”; Magda Chołyst – educator and founder of the educational agency Artist in Bloom. The discussion will be moderated by music journalist Jarek Szubrycht.
