Afenginn & Bastarda | DNK / POL
ABOUT
Afenginn – Based in Copenhagen, this formation is currently one of Scandinavia’s most intriguing groups, operating at the intersection of folk, rock, and classical music (notably featuring frequent references to Baroque music). For years, Afenginn has toured successfully throughout Denmark, appearing as a headliner at the country’s largest festival, the famous Roskilde. Beyond their homeland, the artists have made a mark with special performances in New York and at SXSW in Austin. Their latest conceptual album, titled Opus, is a chamber-pop opera that unites all the hallmarks of the group’s work—from classical music to popular sounds.
In Lublin, the Danes will present a premiere project alongside the Polish trio Bastarda, marking it as one of the special productions of this year’s Different Sounds festival.
Bastarda – Their album, released by the Lado ABC label, was widely regarded by the Polish music industry as one of the most compelling musical events of 2017. The trio—comprising Paweł Szamburski, Michał Górczyński, and Tomasz Pokrzywiński—surprised many by delving into medieval music composed by the now somewhat forgotten 15th-century artist, Piotr Wilhelmi of Grudziądz. His works served as the starting point for Bastarda’s album Promitat eterno, which is largely built around the evocative sounds of clarinets and cello. The album also features a guest appearance by pianist Marcin Masecki, resulting in a highly original and fresh voice within the genre.
For the Different Sounds festival, Bastarda joins forces with the large Danish ensemble Afenginn. Consequently, the stage will feature a truly impressive array of instruments and an orchestra of over ten musicians. This collaborative project will be one of the major premieres of this year’s festival.
